In The Hiding Place, Betsie is the gentle, faithful, and dutiful sister, who seeks only to help the Jews to safety away from the Nazis who have taken over the town of Haarlem in the Netherlands. She has a firm faith in God, believing that He is sure to provide for their needs as they try to live through the terrible experience of the Nazi Occupation. The other members of the family and the transient residents in the house look to her for everything, sure that she will find a way to help them all. Corrie also follows her sister, willing to be helpful but she is not as pure-hearted as Betsie. Often, the others in the house appeal to Corrie if they believe that Betsie’s plans are not realistic or safe. They fear for Betsie, aware that the Nazis will destroy good people as readily as those whom they feel are “undesirable.” Yet the faith of the two sisters has made them the “saviors” of the Jews of Haarlem. They see them as lights shining in the darkness, giving them some hope that there is still goodness in the world.
