Chapter 7 is about Lyddie's journey on the stagecoach to Lowell.  There are other passengers, and for the most part the trip is uneventful.  The stagecoach gets stuck in the mud once, and the men are unable to get it free.  A frustrated Lyddie then takes charge of the situation and gets the stagecoach free.  Lyddie's actions impressed the coach driver so much that he decided to introduce Lyddie to his sister, Mrs. Bedlow.  Mrs. Bedlow owns a boarding house for factory working girls.

In chapter 8 Lyddie meets her roommates at the boarding house.  They are Amelia, Prudence, and Betsy. Mrs. Bedlow gives Lyddie enough money to buy new clothes, and Mrs. Bedlow helps Lyddie get a job in the factory.

Lyddie begins working at the factory in chapter 9.  She is amazed at how noisy and fast the factory work is.  Lyddie meets Diana who teaches Lyddie how to do the factory work.  Diana also encourages Lyddie to write a letter to her family.  Lyddie's roommates warn Lyddie to be careful with how much she trusts Diana, because Diana is a vocal proponent for better working conditions.
