What is a a quote that shows how and when Ponyboy realizes Darry's stresses or sacrifices in The Outsiders?

Ponyboy and Darry are constantly in conflict. Pony feels Darry is harder on him than he is on their other brother, Sodapop. Darry never yells at Soda the way he yells at Pony, which makes Pony feel picked on and unappreciated.

Pony says that he is different from Darry because his oldest brother “works too long and hard to be interested in a story or drawing a picture” (Chapter 1). Therefore, Pony does realize Darry...

Therefore, Pony does realize Darry works hard, but he still finds it difficult to get along with him because he thinks they have nothing in common. He feels Darry doesn’t try to understand him, instead “hollering” at him and treating him like a child.

Darry's hard and firm and rarely grins at all. But then, Darry's gone through a lot in his twenty years, grown up too fast (Chapter 1).

Pony says Darry has “cold” eyes and is always rough with him without meaning to be. His brother Soda teases Darry, but Pony says he’d “just as soon tease a full-grown grizzly.” Darry is very serious and everyone but Soda is afraid of him. When he slaps Pony, it really affects him. No one in his family has never hit him before, and he runs away.

Pony does acknowledge his brother’s sacrifices. He says Darry never has time to do anything anymore, and “Darry didn't deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty.” Pony and Soda both believe Darry works too hard and gave up a lot to take care of them. There is no money or time for college since their parents are dead.

Pony also acknowledges that he has things better than most, especially Johnny.

Compared to Johnny's home, mine was heaven. At least Darry didn't get drunk and beat me up or run me out of the house, and I had Sodapop to talk things over with (Chapter 3).

Pony acknowledges that he loves both of his brothers, even if Darry does scare him. When he comes back from the on-the-run church incident, Pony realizes his brother really does love him and just worries about him. Their relationship is better after that, and Pony is more mature.
