The fire, he realizes, provides warmth, light, protection, a smoke signal, and, lastly, some protection from all the mosquitos. He uses his strength to cut as much wood as possible to help him maintain the fire.
Brian also uses his knowledge of animals to discover a new food source when he notices turtle tracks in the dirt around his shelter. He realizes that the turtle has buried eggs that can be used as food.
