What is a quote from Chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies that shows one of the three kinds of irony? Explain how it is ironic.

The three kinds of irony are verbal, situational, and dramatic.

Verbal irony is saying the opposite of what one means. It is similar to sarcasm. You might say, "That's just great!" when you mean something is terrible.

Situational irony occurs when something happens in the story that is vastly different than what readers would have expected to happen.

Verbal irony is saying the opposite of what one means. It is similar to sarcasm. You might say, "That's just great!" when you mean something is terrible.

Situational irony occurs when something happens in the story that is vastly different than what readers would have expected to happen.

Dramatic irony means that the audience knows something that the characters do not. Romeo and Juliet is a famous example; the audience knows that Juliet faked her death, but Romeo thinks she's actually dead when he drinks the poison.

I found a quote near the beginning of Chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies that is an example of one kind of irony:

“I’ve called an assembly,” said Jack, “because of a lot of things. First, you know now, we’ve seen the beast. We crawled up. We were only a few feet away. The beast sat up and looked at us. I don’t know what it does. We don’t even know what it is—”

In this example, the audience (readers) know what the beast is, but the characters don't. Chapter 6 describes how a figure beneath a parachute fell and landed in a sitting position near the top of the mountain, the wind pulling the parachute to make the figure appear to sit up and flop down again. The audience infers that this figure is a dead soldier who parachuted from a plane. Since the audience knows what the beast is, but the characters do not, this is an example of dramatic irony.
