John Boyne uses various characters of different ages, genders, and backgrounds to prove that understanding the difference between right and wrong is universal. There are several characters throughout the novel that recognize and have the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. Bruno is the youngest character in the novel who has the ability to notice how people are treated differently. He recognizes the way his father and sister treat Maria and also knows that Lieutenant Kotler is treating Pavel and Shmuel terribly. Although he is an adolescent, Bruno understands that there is a way people should treat one another, which is why he is kind to Maria, Pavel, and Shmuel throughout the novel. Bruno's mother also realizes the difference between right and wrong. Whenever she finds out that her husband is in charge of the systematic annihilation of the Jews at Auschwitz, she threatens to leave with the children. Bruno's mother is in a tough position because she loves her husband, yet disagrees with his occupation and priorities. She views Hitler with contempt and is continually trying to self-medicate to ease her mind. Bruno's grandmother also understands that her son's position in the Third Reich is unethical because he is supporting a regime that is slaughtering millions of innocent people and wreaking havoc throughout Europe. These three characters differ in age, gender, and background, yet have the ability to recognize the difference between right and wrong. You can elaborate on these characters' actions throughout the novel to add evidence and supporting details to your essay. For instance, write about the scene where Bruno's grandmother argues with her son on Christmas Day, and also mention Bruno's comments about how his father disrespects Maria. There are numerous examples that depict Bruno recognizing when his sister is acting snobbish towards Maria and include his reaction when he witnesses Kotler beat Pavel.
